Correspondence sent week of May 25th:

Good Morning Senators!

I hope this email finds you well and looking forward to a little more sunshine in the coming days!  This message is for our Senior Families. I wanted to provide an update to our senior moment’s timeline as I know the Class of 2020 is rapidly approaching their last day of school on Friday, May 29th.  As a reminder, all coursework must be submitted by Friday to be counted towards eligibility for June graduation. Students who have not met the State of Delaware graduation requirements will be notified by June 1st so that they can create their summer learning plan to finish in July.

  • May 27th:  Join us live tonight at 6 pm as our Career Technical & Education Department hosts our first-ever virtual CTE Completion Pathway Ceremony!  Our teachers have worked super hard to ensure that our students finishing their pathways are recognized as this is quite an accomplishment!  Viewing links will be available on our website and through our Facebook platform.
  • June 1-June 5th: Senior Week!  Please come out to the DHS campus with your family/friends to celebrate your graduation!  We ask that you continue to maintain social distancing expectations as defined by our Governor, but that you take advantage of the multiple photo spots we will have available in our Dover Stadium!  Don’t miss your opportunity to take photos on our stage replica, our football field & other special 2020 personalized props created by our props committee (special shoutout to Mr. Christman, Mrs. Long & Mrs. Solomon)! Photo spots will be open daily from 8 am-4:30 pm daily.  {Sorry, no bathroom facilities/indoor access will be available.}
    • Yearbooks--we have confirmation that our yearbooks have shipped, we are hopeful to have them available for distribution during senior week-as soon as we have delivery we will confirm dates/times for pick up.
  • June 1: Join us at 6 pm for our Senior Awards Ceremony where we will recognize our top academic learners who have earned departmental awards at DHS and/or community scholarships.  We will officially recognize our Top 10 in the Class of 2020 and announce our Salutatorian & Valedictorian! Students being recognized were sent a message on schoology by Ms. Kellam, please ensure you check your messages so that you will know to tune in:

  • June 3: Graduation Day!  While the Governor announced today that outdoor graduation events could be held, our graduating class is much larger than the limited 250 student gathering; and of course, that isn’t taking into account the family members who do not want to miss this special occasion.  Based on our plans set forth, we have made the decision to continue on our path of the virtual commencement date.  We also feel that our plans for Diploma Day are a once in a life-time experience and will allow more family members to join in the fun! (see next event)

  • June 4: Diploma Day!  For the first time ever, and most likely only time in history, the Class of 2020 will take a victory lapDiploma Ceremony Flyer to cross the finish line at Dover International Speedway!  Students/families may arrive at 4:30 pm to line up and the first victory lap will occur at 5 pm.  Only one car per graduate will be allowed to line up-no exceptions will be made due to logistics and timeline of the evening.  Inside the car, the graduate and additional family members/invited guests may join as long as there is a seat belt for each passenger.  Face coverings will be required (unless the Governor changes that requirement in the meantime). Graduate’s cars should enter the speedway off of Plaza Drive and follow the traffic direction.  To participate in the victory lap you MUST BE in the line up by 6:30 pm.

    • At senior toast, each graduate received an envelope with important information in it for the day!  1) Your name placard - should be displayed on the driver’s side front window so that the name can be announced as they cross the finish line 2) a ticket, the ticket will get your car into the lineup and onto the track.  This will alert our diploma team who has arrived to ensure your diploma is waiting for you at the finish line.  3) Each graduate should be in a cap/gown during this experience so that the lineup crew can verify your association with graduation. If you have not yet picked up your senior bag, please stop by DHS during regular hours, ring our front bell and a secretary will bring it out to you.

A few items to note--

  • We are suggesting that the graduate is in the driver’s seat for this once in a lifetime driving experience. However, it is not required.  If the student does not want to drive the track, we suggest they be on the diver’s side in the backseat to receive their diploma by our Board of Education.
  • Standard sized vehicles ONLY. Per, Dover International Speedway, limos will not be allowed on the track due to safety & accessibility issues. The track incline is as tall as a 4-story building at the top (Woah!), when you enter the track a limo will not be able to clear the decline and would cause major damage to the undercarriage of the vehicle.
  • People will not be allowed to ride in open-bed trucks as there are no seatbelts available in the bed of the truck.
  • If you receive notice that your child has not met graduation requirements, they will not receive their diploma this evening and should not plan to attend this event. {Sorry, no stadium seating will be allowed.}
  • All school-issued Chromebooks must be returned prior to the delivery of a student’s diploma.  Chromebooks can be returned during business hours on May 29th or June 1st. Ring the bell, alert our staff and we will exit to sign your laptop back into you.  Any laptop not returned by June 1st may cause your child to receive a blank diploma case, as we will hold the diploma until the laptop has been returned.  Please make this a priority to return so that your diploma experience is complete!
  • Students are welcome to take their senior sign that is displayed in front of DHS after June 12th. We ask that signs remain in place until then to proudly display our graduates to our Dover community!

We are so excited for the last few weeks to come as I know this will be one memorable closure to one crazy school year!

Best Wishes, Dr. V
