Visual art is an arena for self-reflection, creative problem-solving and personal growth. Art involves new ideas, invention, originality, unexpected responses, independence, discovery, experimentation, open attitudes, interaction of ideas, imagination, flexibility, self-expression, personal imagery, conceptualization of ideas, risk taking, trial and error, seeing similarities and differences, self-evaluation, making choices and decisions, and justifying these decisions. The Academy of the Arts visual art pathway embedded at Dover High School aligns to the National Core Arts Standards. These aspects of the curriculum are sequenced from level to level, becoming increasingly more advanced as the student progresses through the program. The Academy course adds additional challenges, honors level work, that may include, virtual museum visits, artistic process reviews, portfolio completion, and required awards programs. Our goal of the Academy of the Arts: Visual Arts pathway is to emphasize self-awareness, self-discipline, and personal motivation within the visual arts.
